Summer of 2010: Devington Community Center was proud to host the Augustus Hawkins Literacy Center in an eight week summer program in June and July, 2010. The project was a collaboration beween Devington CDC and The National Council for Education Black Children (NCEBC).
The program focused on literacy in language arts, and ran daily from 9 AM to 2:45. It was open to youth ages 12 to 19 who had not been attending school. We enrolled a total of twenty-four young people, and 13 of those attended the program in its entirety. The youth were instructed by an experienced IPS educator, and served a hot lunch every day, thanks to Second Helpings.

Summer of 2010:The Devington urban farm – a 5-acre plot where middle school and high school students came together. Here, they learned about gardening, sustainability and nutrition, made connections to their community and sharpened their life skills.
More than 50 students in Goodwill Industries' Jobs for America's Graduates, or JAG, at Arlington High School participated in the community garden. The JAG students helped plant, hoe, weed and harvest 19 plots last spring and this school year, as part of their community service work. In the classroom, they learned about organic gardening, processed food and the environmental benefits of eating locally.
