– Urban farming –

Above, First-Lady Michelle Obama enlists local students to help dig up the White House lawn and plant a vegetable garden – a symbolic step that harkens back to Eleanor Roosevelt planting a ‘Victory Garden’ on the White House lawn during World War II.

Devington Urban Farm

As residents begin to look for ways to lower diabetes, obesity, hypertension and asthma rates among zip code 46226, Devington Urban Farm promises to be an effort that spans business, agriculture, health, crime prevention and education.

According to Kay Grimm, who was 2010 farm manager, and founder of Basic Roots Community Foods, an urban farm takes an underused green space and transforms it into something that speaks of community, and provides the practical benefits of a sustainable urban food source.

"Because we're surrounded by a lot of concrete, we actually have a longer growing season in the city which makes it ideal and you can grow organically because we can control the smaller, concentrated space," said Grimm.

After instruction by volunteers and master urban farmers, participants will have a thorough understanding of horticulture, plant and herb identification, ecology, agribusiness, canning and preserving, and health and nutrition.

Devington is currently seeking partnerships with volunteers, funders , Purdue University and the Marion County Extension in hopes of matching area at risk students with the Urban Farm program 2011.

Devington residents young and old will also help care for the okra, tomatoes, greens, potatoes, broccoli, beans, bell peppers, lettuce, cut flowers and herbs that will be grown on the farm. Kroger Stores have promised to carry the produce in their stores.

In 2010, the Johnson County Antique Machinery Association came to Indianapolis to plow and "turn over" the soil into separate plots covering one acre of land east of Devington Plaza.. The search is on currently for a new home for Devington's Urban Farm.
